Dead coral found near site of BP
Scientists on a research cruise this week, a community of deep sea corals dead and dying not far from the place of blown-out well of BP.
“Within a few minutes after we arrived … it was clear to the biologists on board that this site is unlike any other we’ve seen over hundreds of hours studying the deep corals in the Gulf of Mexico Over the past ten years, “Penn State University biology professor Charles Fisher Chief Scientist and Cruise said in a press release.
A colony of hard coral at depths exceeding 4,000 meters was tissue rejection and the production of mucus, while a nearby community had extensive patchy soft corals. A species of starfish in relation to the coral was in bad shape. (more…)
Thad Allen’s legacy still formed by BP oil spill
NEW ORLEANS – Some equate retired Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen with a no-nonsense combat commander – Gen. Patton of the oil spills – face down millions of gallons of crude advancing and won.
“Adm. Allen helped us during some difficult times,” said Mike Wiggins, mayor of Pensacola, Florida, one of the several states affected by the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
To others, Allen, national incident commander for the spill, is the public face of the federal government early rumbling of the reaction, oil seep marshes and ruin livelihoods allowed. (more…)
BP blowout preventer placed aboard ship
NEW ORLEANS – Researchers look at what went wrong in the Gulf of Mexico oil spill are one step closer to the answers that an important piece of evidence now safely aboard a ship.
Engineers took 29 ½ hours for the 50-foot, 300-ton blowout preventer lift of one mile under the sea. The five-story device infringed on the surface at 6:54 pm CDT and looked largely intact with black spots on the yellow metal.

Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill: Former top drill regulator set to testify
WASHINGTON – When the Presidential Committee on the Deepwater Horizon disaster research are meeting today’s second hearing, the panel intends to examine the regulatory lapses that paved the way for the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
Witnesses for the seven-member panel Elizabeth Birnbaum, formerly the nation’s top regulator drilling, the word publicly for the first time since she resigned under pressure after five weeks the 20-4 blowout at BP’s Macondo well. Two other previous drilling supervisors are scheduled to join Birnbaum fielding questions about whether the government is too lax in regulating the industry. (more…)
Details to be faulted in Plan Oil Spill Claims meeting
NEW ORLEANS – The details of exactly how the $ 20 billion fund set up by BP will be distributed to those affected by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, which were made public on Friday did little to just eliminate concerns and suspicions, rather than drawing sharp criticism from different quarters.
Small business owners, shrimp boats, the government officials and others complained that the rules were too restrictive and contrary to federal law. (more…)
