SYDNEY – The production was back to normal at the giant Olympic Dam mine in Australia seven months after an accident during the fourth output cut world’s largest copper deposit by 75 percent, owner BHP Billiton (BHP.AX) (BLT. PERTH – Western Australian Mines Minister Norman Moore and met with executives of BHP Billiton, on Monday to voice “deep concern” over the “persistence of security problems” at Leinster business operations.
This comes as a miner was killed at the Perseverance Mine Underground Leinster on Sunday. A spokesman for BHP Billiton said Monday that the company had suspended operations at Leinster, but was unable to provide details, such as investigations into the accident were still ongoing. Read more

All 29 workers trapped in a flooded coal mine in southwest China’s Sichuan province have been taken to safety, ending a day rescue operation, China Central Television reported.
The miners were wrapped in quilts by paramedics as they emerged from the pit to the applause of a crowd gathered at the entrance, the state broadcaster showed. Rescuers took about one hour between the release of the first and last employee.
China, the holder of the worst mine safety record in the world, is to merge small mining and closing unlicensed producers to protect workers. Last year the government closed 1,088 small coal mines which are considered unsafe, thus reducing fatalities by 18 percent to 2,631. That compared with 18 deaths in mining accidents in the U.S. in 2009. (more…)
Oil prices rose nearly 2% Wednesday after OPEC said it was not an agreement to increase oil production to reach. U.S. crude rose $ 1.68, or 1.7%, to $ 100.70 a barrel. Oil prices trading around $ 1 just before the OPEC announcement. The price of Brent crude – the European benchmark – rose 1.5% to $ 118.35 a barrel.
quarterly meeting of OPEC was widely watched by analysts. The cartel was under great pressure to increase output as oil prices approached $ 120 a barrel last month.
