Chile Mine Rescue, 32 of 33 miners were above ground after trappes deep underground for 69 days
SAN JOSE MINE, Chile miners who were trapped deep underground for 69 days were drawn to the rescue for a Wednesday in a process that was faster than expected and people around the world was transfixed.The miners rose to the surface in a red, white and blue rescue capsule called “The Phoenix”. By Wednesday noon, 32 of the 33 miners were above ground. As they came to the Chilean newspaper websites of keeping a running score, almost like a sporting event. “Things have gone well as extraordinary so far,” said Health Minister Jaime Mañalich.
Chairman Sebastian Pinera said the rescue would come faster than expected wrap. At the current rate of a surface miner every 40 minutes, the operation could end Wednesday night, he said in a press conference, instead of Thursday as originally expected. (more…)

Today, within a mine is much safer than they say 50 years ago. In the United States alone since the beginning of the 20th century, more than 100,000 people have died mining. There are a handful more that injured at work, and / or become physically disabled. South African platinum mines ordered to limit Mining Safety
South Africa, the world’s largest producer of platinum, ordered mines in the northwestern region of the mining industry by reducing the size of mine-able rock panels and leaving large pillars behind to improve security, Aquarius Platinum Ltd. said. The width of each rock panel should be reduced to 6 meters (20 feet) of 10 meters now, according to an instruction from the principal inspector of mines in the region, Aquarius said in a statement today. Western Kentucky mine roof plan already in fatal accident
Frankfort, Ky. – The Western Kentucky underground coal mine where two men were slain in April 1 roof does not have an adequate roof control plan, the state Energy and Environment Cabinet said Wednesday. The findings of her research will be made to the state Mine Safety Review Commission, which the operator could fine. Two miners, Michael Carter, 28, of Madisonville, Travis and Justin, 27, of Dixon, deceased April 29 after a massive collapse of the roof at the Dotiki Mine Hopkins County. Two others were injured.
