EU undeterred by Iran threat of oil-cut: trade chief

iran oilThe European Union Trade Commissioner on Thursday brushed off the potential impact of an Iranian suspension of oil supplies to say such a threat would not sway Europe for its opposition to Iran acquiring nuclear weapons. English language Iran’s Press TV said Iran’s oil supplies stop put to France, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Netherlands and Spain – its largest customers in the EU – in retaliation for an EU ban on Iranian crude oil as a result of force in July.

But the Iranian Oil Ministry denied state media reports.

The European Union Trade Commissioner, Karel De Gucht, said that Europe would adapt to the consequences of the Iranian action and Europe remained committed to stopping Iran’s nuclear weapons program.

“If they cut to the earlier, we would respond faster, that’s what we’d do,” he told a group of business people and journalists in Hong Kong after a trip to Beijing.

He said the EU was determined to press Iran to curb its nuclear ambitions, as well as developments in the nuclear know-how, including new centrifuges able to enrich uranium much faster proclaimed.

“Nobody really wants that Iran have nuclear weapons … We should not change our line, because it is a threat from Iran, that’s not how it works.”

Iran has long refused to curbs on its nuclear program, saying it is meant for civilian applications, including the production of electricity for the rapidly growing domestic demand.
