Probably the easiest way for us to invest in precious metals is through mutual funds and ETFs. By investing in some of the newer ETF (for example, SPDR Gold Shares [NYSE: GLD]), one is more likely to invest in physical commodities of various precious metals or in forward and futures contracts. Using mutual funds or some of the older, more established precious metals ETFs, one is more likely to invest in gold mining corporations.
Each type of investment, the pluses and minuses. Investment in the physical commodity are considered more of a safe haven, while investment in gold mines are considered more risky because the funds’ value is based on the profitability of the underlying businesses and of course the price of the commodity. Unsecured mining activities are inherently riskier than covered mining, so there are different levels of risk even among mining stocks. These are topics you should discuss with your financial planner or research in the funds prospectus.
China
Investors are worried that China might have to raise interest rates to inflation, which worries of falling demand led to a wide range of resources to combat them. A slowdown in China would ripple around the world, because the country has helped offset the effect sluggish growth elsewhere, as in the U.S. Many companies have credited international sales as a major revenue driver.
USAA Precious Metals & Minerals Fund
The USAA Precious Metals & Minerals Fund (USAGX), for example, the average return of 29.32%, 32.64% and 15.19% for the past 5, 10 and 15 years, respectively, according to Morningstar. U.S. Global Investors Gold and precious metals (USERX) gives for the same periods were 23.65%, 27.56% and 2.13%.

Silver Rounds
While tubes do not protect against scratches, scratching is not a major concern. Silver rounds are silver rounds, silver bullion a fundamental investment in a “money” to form. Frankly, nobody cares if a few scratches. That does not mean they are not properly stored. For example, if they are buried and are colored, they lose resale value. Although silver rounds packed in tubes are better protected, put silver rounds in the tubes do not have a higher resale value.
