Officials have confirmed that tar balls found on the weekend on vacation in Crystal Beach Bolivar Peninsula from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, marking the first time that oil from the lake is found on beaches Texas.Approximately 10-12 tar balls washed ashore on Crystal Beach on Saturday. On Sunday 5 liters of oil were also found on the same beach.
The tar balls ranged in size from a dime to a golf ball.
After the beach workers cleaned oil and tar balls were sent to labs for analysis. Officials confirmed that the oil spilled from the Deepwater Horizon.
However, officials said the composition of the oil was not consistent with having made 400 miles in the ocean. Researchers are looking for him for the possibility that oil would have occurred on the side of a ship or in the belly of a ship in the water had taken.
More tar balls were found scattered about 1.5 miles on East Galveston Beach on Sunday. Officials have not confirmed the source of tar balls, and expect test results on Tuesday.
Tilman Ferttita, CEO of Landry’s Restaurants and developer of a boardwalk in Kemah frequented by tourists, said he was not concerned about the tar-balls because a familiar face in Galveston. He will however be concerned if it continues and swells to a problem, as it has in other countries along the Gulf Coast where his chain of seafood restaurants operate.
Landry has lost millions in sales and suffered from higher seafood prices since the spill occurred, he said, adding that the company is in the process of reviewing claims against BP.
The company buys much of its seafood from suppliers around the world, so it’s not as heavily influenced by local price jumps as the others, he said. But as contracts run out, he expects also hit with higher prices.
“We are now suffering a huge impact, but it is growing,” he said. “We hope Galveston remains a non-issue.”
If the tar balls found in Galveston are related to the oil spill, will be the key to find out how they got here, Roschelle said Gaskin, a spokeswoman for the Galveston Island Convention & Visitors Bureau. The Coast Guard, as late as last week, had told the agency that oil from the spill was not predicted to reach Galveston, she said.
The Bureau of beach tar balls patrol was spotted on East Beach Sunday, she said, but noted that “tar balls on our beaches are not uncommon, especially when we had such high water levels.”
Meanwhile, as the Coast Guard continues its investigations, the beaches are still open and safe to swim, she said.
“We do have a good Fourth of July weekend and as it unfolds, we will to keep tourists,” she said.
A spokeswoman for Moody Gardens declined comment.
