CANBERRA – Australian Finance Minister Lindsay Tanner said Tuesday the government can not be a timetable for a deal with the mining of a planned new tax on the resource sector “super profits”. The comments come amid speculation the center-left Labour government will seek to raise the issue before Parliament breaks for an eight-week winter recess on June 24 to resolve. “You can not set a specific time slot because the key here is getting it right,” Tanner told Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio.
Asked whether the next two weeks could be the last time the House meets in August before any election, Tanner said he expects that an election be held “around the three-year”. The last federal election was held November 24, 2007.
