Anglo Platinum employee accused of disrupting community meeting. The Bench Marks Foundation has expressed concern about suggesting that an employee of Anglo Platinum was instrumental in preventing a meeting of the displaced community Magobading place last weekend. The community meeting was to have happened with a view to an agreement entered into with Anglo Platinum Magobading displaced community in the implementation of 02/18/2010. However, the meeting was prevented from happening by a group of angry young people from the surrounding villages. It is claimed that the youth were organized by an employee of Anglo Platinum, Mr. Mthiyana Trinity.
Bench Marks Foundation Executive Director, John Capel, said: “Over the past two months, Anglo Platinum has a historic agreement in France came from the meeting of February 18 signed and agreed to talk to the community and meeting the requirements. We are deeply concerned about reports of intimidation of the community, some of whom were threatened with injury and even death. This kind of harassment undermines the legitimate work of the community. We therefore call for the Anglo Platinum every effort to ensure that none of its employees are involved in any way in such a disruptive and intimidating behavior to make. ”
The Foundation noted that Magobading is a displaced community, and Anglo Platinum has promised to compensate in various ways. This includes promises halls and homes of members of the community to renovate.
The community has also called for an independent fund to set up the resources to enable the community in various ways, including job creation.
Capel added that the foundation is in talks with its domestic and international allies to assess the way forward. A meeting with COSATU, SACC will the NGO Coalition Limpopo will soon be held to mobilize support for the community. In addition, a complaint is opened with the South African police in Limpopo against those responsible for the threats against the community.
