Charleston, W.Va. A new report to Congress says the Environmental Protection Agency’s decision to give license for Appalachian surface mines for extra scrutiny to threaten nearly 18,000 jobs in the region. The National Mining Association says the report by the Republican minority staff of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee shows scores of companies are also threatened. Republican Senator James Inhofe of Oklahoma released the report Friday.
The EPA initially took 235 applications and approved only 45 of them. The remaining 190 operations in question can produce 2 billion tons of coal and support 17,806 jobs and small businesses 81.
Increased monitoring by the EPA has reduced the flow of the water quality permits for mines in the region to a trickle.
