A miner Massey Energy is now deceased from injuries suffered more than a week earlier in an accident at one of the West Virginia mining company, said government regulators. James Erwin, 55, was injured when he became pinned between 05.10 a piece of heavy equipment and a block of coal at Ruby’s Massey Energy underground mine in Mingo County. Mr. Erwin condition was improving after his left leg was amputated but he developed an infection and died Thursday at about 6 hours today, state and federal regulators said.
Erwin’s death comes as Richmond, Virginia-based Massey faces criminal and civil investigation into an explosion that 29 men slain April 5 at the highest bough mine in West Virginia. The explosion was the nation’s deadliest coal mining disaster in 40 years.
At least 31 people have died in West Virginia coal mines this year, and 36 rural. Regulators have not determined whether an independent death of another West Virginia coal mine earlier this month will be classified as mining-related.
