Massey wants public hearing into mine disaster

Massey Energy mining companyMassey Energy Co. (MEE.N), which has been criticized for its safety record, called Wednesday for investigation of the explosion of last month that 29 miners slain by a Massey-owned mine will be held in public. “Massey strongly the principle that research on the upper main branch incident supports independent, honest and aggressive,” he said in a statement.

“Transparency is an important part of this process, and we therefore call for MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) to carry out its research through a public hearing, rather than through closed door sessions.”

There was no immediate response from MSHA.

Last week, U.S. officials told Reuters that, Massey was involved in a criminal investigation by the FBI after April 5 coal mine explosion in Mont Coal, West Virginia.

The explosion was the worst U.S. mining disaster since 1970.

Organized labor has been that the safety record of Massey is inferior to that of other major coal companies. “The great truth is that 52 people were slain on the Massey property since 2000,” United Mine Workers of America spokesman Phil Smith told Reuters. “No other Coal Company has even half.”

Massey’s Chief Executive Officer Thurs Blankenship has denied the explosion was the result of “willful” disregard for safety, but acknowledged that a number of mines Massey targeted in a recent inspection “blitz” by MSHA.
