Massey Energy Co. (MEE.N) on board is looking at how the mining company management responded to the safety of federal violations in the past two years, according to a letter from a member of the board to an investor. Last month, an explosion in the mine in Upper Mont Coal Branch, West Virginia, 29 miners slain in the worst U.S. mining disaster since 1970.
Bobby Inman, lead independent director Massey, said in a letter released by the company directors launched the probe after the accident and had an academic expert hired to the violations cited by the U.S. government to assess how they responded to Massey.
Inman confirmed that the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking into possible criminal violations, and said the company would be a first report of the probe at its annual meeting on May 18
