Diversified miner BHP Billiton has restarted the Groote Eylandt manganese mine in the Northern Territory. Operations at the mine were suspended on March 28, due to a threat of a tropical cyclone. A spokesman said the company online Mining Weekly on Thursday that the operation was restarted in line with the Groote Eylandt Mining Company (Gemco security procedures).
The spokesman would not comment on the lost production during downtime.
Gemco is jointly owned by BHP Billiton (60%) and Anglo American Corporation (40%) and is a leading global supplier of manganese ore. The company employs approximately 250 people and a large number of permanent and temporary contractors.
